The ABM College Medical Office Assistant & Unit Clerk Diploma program is designed to provide students with the technology, business, and communication fundamentals needed to work within a health care office setting.
This accelerated program provides students with exposure to current industry trends and real-world office settings through our 4-week practicum. Additional program emphasis is placed on the development of the student communication and the interpersonal skills required to successfully perform within a health care environment.
As health care is one of the fastest-growing industries within Canada, prospective students can look forward to a broad range of employment opportunities. Upon successful completion of this program, graduates are qualified to work in a variety of administrative roles within hospitals, long-term care facilities, medical clinics, or other health care centres.

Admission Requirements

Standard Admission

Students must meet ONE of these criteria*:
Alberta High School Diploma or equivalent with minimum score of 50% in Grade 12 English and Mathematics on verified transcript
-OR-
General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) with a minimum score of 450 in English and Mathematics, plus successful interview with ABM College Administration, and if student’s first language is not English, Canadian Language Benchmark of 5 with SLE Language Evaluation Test (Accuplacer)

*All students must provide a medical certificate, proof of immunization for Hepatitis B, and complete CPR & First Aid certification prior to admission.

Mature Admission

Students must meet ALL of these criteria*:
1. At least 18 years of age prior to admission
2. Out of high school for at least two years
3. Score of 15 or higher on Entrance Exam (Scholastic Wonderlic) OR 33 credits towards an Alberta High School Diploma or equivalent
4. Successful interview with ABM College Administration
5. If student’s first language is not English, Canadian Language Benchmark of 5 with SLE Language Evaluation Test (Accuplacer)

This diploma program enables graduates to work either as a clinical Medical Office Assistant or as a hospital Unit Clerk.

At ABM College our Medical Office Assistant and Unit Clerk program is designed to provide students with the technology, business, and communication fundamentals needed to work within a health care office setting. This comprehensive course covers four key areas: Medical Terminology, Medical Office Administration, Word Processing and Medical Transcription

This accelerated program provides students with exposure to current industry trends and to real-world office settings through our 4 week practicum. Additional program emphasis is placed on the development of the student communication and inter-personal skills required to successfully perform within a health care environment.

As health care continues to remain one of the fastest growing industries within Canada, prospective students can look forwarded to a broad range of employment opportunities. Medical Office Assistant & Unit Clerk Components

Course Description: Microsoft Office training will help students to effectively utilize all the features of Microsoft Office products, and increase productivity. We cover and train our students in Microsoft Word ,Excel ,Access ,PowerPoint and Outlook email management applications. This 4 week module helps students sharpen their skills in Microsoft office and preparing themselves for the main course modules.

MS Word

Objective: Create a basic word document & add multiple elements in an enhanced document, TOC, headers/footers, lists, headings, inserting non-text items, options  

MS Outlook

Objective: How to make Outlook work for you; to establish controls, displays, rules, permissions, security; track meeting replies; create out-of-office messages, notes, tasks  

MS Excel

Objective: Create a basic excel spreadsheet for calculations and modify, save and print an excel worksheet. Format an existing spreadsheet including financials and formulas, enhance a basic excel worksheet using Pivot Tables and Charts, advanced functions like SUMIF, COUNTIF as well as use Vlookups.

MS PowerPoint

Objective: Create a basic slide Presentation and repeatable, formatted slides using slide masters and templates. Best practices, design, insert objects, slide animation and transitions, presentation options.

Course Description: This course introduces the students to Anatomy and Physiology of all the body systems. Students learn from a cellular level to detailed structures, including all the body systems and functions. The purpose of this course is to prepare students to work in a health care environment as medical language is the language of healthcare.

Course Description: The study of Pharmacology equips students with knowledge about medications, their uses, side effects and mode of action. Students will learn about these drugs in a systematic way as they are used in the treatment of different diseases

Course Description: This course elaborates the role of a medical transcriptionist in the healthcare field. It highlights the professional skills needed to transcribe accurately. It introduces various technologies that are used in this field. This course prepares the student to support physicians in healthcare documentation

Course Description: Students learn the use of Medical soft wares and their use in medical documentation. Computerized documentation is thoroughly explained .Students are prepared to work in a computerized environment

Course Description: This course covers the different methods of communicating in a medical office. The proper use of fax and telephone is discussed in detail. The vital role of telephone manners in effective client communication is discussed. Strategies to deal with different type of callers is explained. The proper way of taking telephone message emphasized. Proper protocol for writing emails is outlined. The accuracy of written communication is highlighted. Face to face communication is discussed in detail.

Course Description: This course covers basic accounting including debits and credits, balance sheet and Income statements. It outlines and explains the normal balances in accounts. It introduces the Accounting principles. It explains in depth the Accounts payable procedures.

Course Description: This course highlights the most important role of an administrative health professional in a medical office setting which is appointment scheduling, both manual and electronic. This course covers several appointment booking styles and their advantages and disadvantages. How to manage booking specialist appointments and diagnostic tests is outlined.

The students will get introduced to health care plans, health cards and the importance of validating health cards. The course will highlight insured and uninsured services.This course will also provide an introduction to the way heath care bills are handled by the ministry. The role of an AHP in this process is explained. Students will learn about the claims submission and the billing cycle. Different types of claims like reciprocal claims, workers compensation boards and health care plans are discussed

Course Description: This Course highlights the dynamic and vital role of an Administrative Health Professional (AHP). The evolving role of the administrative health professional is explained in length. Different employment options. Identification of skills and desirable attributes of the administrative health professional are focused. Positive attitude and professional mannerism is highlighted. Ethical principles and decision making are discussed as required within the health care environment

Course Description: This course covers the concepts of health and safety. It details strategies about Infection control and disease prevention. It explains in detail the concept of Nosocomial infections. Students are given an introduction about the chain of infection and modes of transmission of infection. The role of an AHP in storing and handling vaccines is discussed in detail. The students get an introduction about different lab and diagnostic tests. Patient preparation for these tests is discussed in detail. Different lab forms and their formats are discussed. In the lab students have hands on class where they learn to check vital signs and essential clinical skills needed in a health care setting.

Course Description: This course introduces the students to the composition of health chart. The various documents of health record and its management are discussed. The legal aspect of a health chart and the privacy legislature are introduced. The importance of confidentiality is emphasized. Various components of a medical chart are discussed in detail.

Course Description: This course requires a student to be placed in health care setting where they can have a hands on experience.
