Canada is a country built on diversity – not just in geography and climate, but in language, identity, and heritage. As we welcome June, we also celebrate a range of cultural observances that reflect the many communities that make Canada unique: National Indigenous History Month, Filipino Heritage Month, Italian Heritage Month, Portuguese Heritage Month, and Pride Month.
These aren’t isolated recognitions – they are interconnected reminders of how much stronger we are when we embrace each other’s differences.
Canadian Diversity
Multiculturalism is more than just policy in Canada – it’s a lived value. Since the Multiculturalism Act of 1988, Canada has officially supported the idea that all citizens are equal, regardless of racial or ethnic origins, language, or religious affiliation. But more than legal protections, multiculturalism here means everyday exposure to new ideas, food, art, festivals, and perspectives that broaden our understanding of the world.
This is especially evident in cities like Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver, where over 200 languages are spoken, and where neighbourhoods bustle with cultural festivals, family-owned businesses, and multigenerational traditions.
National Indigenous History Month
June is an important time to honour the heritage and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada. It is also an opportunity for deeper learning about the historical and ongoing injustices Indigenous communities have faced – and a call for reconciliation and lasting respect. Events, ceremonies, and educational initiatives take place across the country throughout the month.
Filipino Heritage Month
The Filipino community is one of the fastest-growing in Canada, and their contributions are especially visible in healthcare, education, hospitality, and the arts. June is a celebration of Filipino resilience, community values, and cultural richness – from traditional dances like the Tinikling to dishes like adobo and halo-halo that bring people together. Additionally, Filipino Independence Day is celebrated on June 12th each year – an important event showcasing culture, history, and national pride. Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan!
Italian Heritage Month
From food and fashion to architecture and the arts, Italian Canadians have left an indelible mark on Canada’s cultural identity. June is a time to celebrate the legacy of Italian immigrants – many of whom helped build Canada’s infrastructure in the 20th century – as well as the vibrancy of modern Italian culture in Canadian cities today. Italian cuisine from pizza to pasta is incredibly popular amongst Canadians of every heritage. Mangiamo!
Portuguese Heritage Month
With deep roots in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and Alberta, Portuguese Canadians have shaped Canada’s business and cultural landscapes for generations. June is a time to celebrate the vibrancy of Portuguese heritage – including Fado music, festas, traditional cuisine, and the strong sense of family and faith that binds communities together.
Pride Month
Pride Month celebrates the resilience, creativity, and contributions of Canada’s 2SLGBTQ+ community. What began as a protest has grown into a movement for visibility, equality, and inclusion. Pride is a reminder that diversity includes sexual orientation and gender identity – and that safe, accepting spaces are essential for everyone to thrive. Despite achieving some progress over the years, most people of differing orientations still face heavy discrimination and persecution around the world. Homosexuality is considered a crime in 64 countries globally – at least 12 of which enforce a death penalty for it. Far too many struggle for survival to even dream of equality.
A Global Perspective
It’s tempting to think multiculturalism is inevitable in modern society, but it takes effort, education, and intention. Across the world (particularly close to home), we’re seeing the dangers of militant nationalism and xenophobia – societies divided by fear and exclusion. Canada strives for a better model: one rooted in empathy, mutual respect, and shared opportunity.
Diversity in Education and Workplaces
At ABM College, we live this diversity every day. Our students come from all over the world, bringing unique stories and perspectives. Whether you study Health, Business, or Technology, you’ll find that inclusive classrooms lead to stronger teams, richer conversations, and better problem-solving skills – qualities employers value deeply.
Moving Forward, Together
As we celebrate some of the many communities that enrich our country this June, we’re reminded that multiculturalism is not just about identity – it’s about connection. It’s a shared belief that Canada is stronger when we lift each other up, listen to one another, and stand together. It’s fitting that the month caps off with Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27th.
Because cultures that thrive are cultures that embrace unity without uniformity – where diversity isn’t a challenge to be managed, but a strength to be celebrated.
Unity without uniformity. Diversity without division.
