aking a massage therapy course is a great option if you like to work with clients and want to work in an uplifting, hands-on environment. With an above-average outlook, this career is high in demand and always busy.

In this blog, we’ll go through two aspects of the benefits of massage therapy:

    • Benefits of taking a diploma program.
    • Benefits of the job when you get into the field.

    Let’s dive into it:

Benefits of a Massage Therapy Diploma Program

Before you enroll in a course to learn about the career and industry, you should learn about what’s offered. There are a few features that massage therapy programs have access to their students for the best possible learning experience, some of which include:

    • Having an interactive classroom environment
    • Offering flexible class times
    • Being able to learn at a massage clinic on-site
    • Meeting provincial standards for certification

    Having an interactive classroom environment

An interactive classroom environment gets students comfortable with the massage techniques they’ll be performing on their clients in the future. Instructors make sure that students have access to additional support and tutoring should they need it, to ensure that best practices will be met.

Interaction makes you comfortable as a student with diverse clients and you can meet their needs, which will also allow you to build your clientele in the long run.

    Flexible class times are offered

In a massage therapy program, flexible class times are offered for students throughout the day, including morning, afternoon, evening, and on weekends. Many people who decide to pursue a massage therapy diploma are finally making a career choice to benefit their future for the first time, or are making a career switch and have other responsibilities as well.

This is why it’s important that different timings are offered, and students can work towards their goals and not have to sacrifice other aspects of their life.

Learning at a massage clinic on-site

Students not only learn the theory in a massage therapy course but also have a space where they can actively practice what they’ve learned, with real clients. Having a massage clinic on-site allows students to complete their required hours with first-hand experience of what it’s like to work in an actual massage therapy clinic.

It will prepare them to work in the industry and also learn how to deal with different types of clients, and how they can give them the massage of their choice and meet their needs.

    Meeting provincial standards for certification

A massage therapy program should meet provincial standards for students to become registered massage therapists (RMT). When students graduate, they should have no problem transitioning into becoming an RMT.

The easiest way to make sure that an institution that you are considering meets the requirements is to check provincial websites on what schools are listed for massage therapy.

Benefits of a Massage Therapy Career

Working as a massage therapist is a rewarding career. You get to assist clients with their physical issues and help them on the road to relaxation and recovery. However, some people who are interested in a massage therapy program may not know what the career entails, some benefits include:

    • Practicing a variety of massage techniques
    • Getting to work with other health professionals
    • Good working conditions
    • Defined working hours

Getting to practice a variety of massage techniques

What students learn throughout the massage therapy course is that massage therapists have many duties. They are trained in various areas of massage and offer different techniques to different clients depending on their needs.

Massage therapists start by assessing clients and determining what is the best type of treatment for them. They then explain the procedures and benefits to the client, including any risks that may be involved. They also have safe practice by ensuring that the client is aware that they can stop or change the procedure at any time if they wish to.

Massage techniques include relaxation techniques, soft tissue stretching, soft tissue manipulation, manual pressure to specific points of the body, trigger point therapy, hydrotherapy, joint play and mobilizations, myofascial release, and more.

    Working with other health professionals

When the procedure is completed, the massage therapist will suggest home care that is suitable for the client, such as stretching, relaxation, strengthening, and posture improvement.

Massage therapists don’t always work alone. With the help of physiotherapists, chiropractors, and other professionals in the medical field, they can help develop the right treatment plan for their clients.

A good massage therapy program will teach the best communication methods so that you can help to come up with the best plans for your clients. On the logistical side, they also store and maintain client records as well as contact and respond to insurance companies.

    Good working conditions

In most cases, after graduating from a massage therapy program, you will have the option to work in private practice or as part of a healthcare team that’s multidisciplinary. Massage therapists will work with one client at a time, and help transfer clients to where they need to go.

There are also traveling massage therapists, who go to people’s homes. In that case, they will also need to be able to lift their equipment which can weigh up to 20 kg. While the work may be demanding, massage therapists are passionate about what they do. They may work throughout the week, including evenings and weekends. Some massage therapists work in different locations as well.

    Defined working hours

Hours of work and compensation depend on each work setting and therapist. Some massage therapists work evenings and weekends. Others work part-time in several locations.

A massage therapy program is different from other related courses in the sense that there are different criteria for work. For example, in Alberta, five massages a day for five days of the week is considered a full-time massage therapist, although that adds up to about 25 hours of work, rather than the typical 30 to 40 hours.

After taking the massage therapy course at ABM College, you’ll have the advantage of becoming a registered massage therapist (RMT) and creating your clientele base.
