    Support Makes Recovery Possible

Community service worker responsibilities include assisting clients in recovery from various types of illnesses and challenges. They work at the front line in community services and are the first point of contact for clients reaching out for support.

As a support worker, you will need to meet formal education requirements to pursue a career in this field. The job requires you to work closely with clients, as well as, their healthcare team, to ensure they reach recovery. Here are five community service worker responsibilities that are essential to recovery.

    1. Providing Emotional Support

Community support workers are responsible for providing emotional support to clients in the form that is appropriate and required. This can mean you are listening to clients inner thoughts and providing a support shoulder to lean on. Recovering from an illness alone can be terrifying, and many clients do not have other support people in their lives.

    2. Monitoring Health Care Needs

Many individuals who reach out for support through social service agencies, will need assistance monitoring their health care needs. This can include making phone calls for doctors appointments, dental appointments, and other required health related appointments. They may need assistance to ensure they make it to these appointments and keep up-to-date with whatever their recovery plan may be, as advised by their doctors, nurses, and psychologists.

    3. Teaching Life Skills

One of the main job duties for a support worker is to help clients with their daily activities, such as assisting with paying bills, helping them communicate with friends and relatives, assisting with their personal hygiene and much more.

    4. Monitoring Dietary Habits

Working with clients of various ages, and backgrounds, as a caseworker you will be ensuring they are eating and drinking properly. This can also include helping them with grocery shopping, and preparing healthy meals.

    5. Keeping Accurate Reports

Part of ensuring your clients make it to recovery is keeping accurate daily reports on the support you provide and their response to such services. This is beneficial for other care professionals involved in their recovery process, as it helps them to assess where adjustments need to happen.

The most important part of helping clients successfully make the journey towards recovery is to connect them with further services within the community, and support them with the positive changes they make in their life. There are other reasons to become a community support worker, but watching the difference you help someone make in their life is one of the most rewarding.
