ocial media has evolved from being a place to connect with people to a valuable resource Internet users can rely on. Not only does it allow you to connect with friends and family, but it also connects you to employers, businesses, personal content and public information.

If your apps are limited to Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube or TikTok, you might want to consider looking into some of these promising apps that will balance your social media diet and expand your network:

    1. Wealth Simple
    2. We Work
    3. Fiverr
    4. The Fork
    5. Meetup

    1. Wealth Simple

What makes this app so great? Sadat Islam, currently a software engineer at Yelp, says “it’s not really the app that is cool, but rather the company ... idea or concept.”

“Making apps is easy. It’s just a medium to create something,” he says, adding that the business idea is what makes apps like Wealth Simple impressive.

If Uber simplified the process of getting a ride and Airbnb enhanced the process of getting affordable accommodations while traveling, Wealth Simple simplified the whole process of investing, according to Islam, who is a frequent user of the app.

Unlike traditional investment methods, investors don’t need to hire a financial advisor to manage and balance their investments. The automated investing app uses investing experts, also known as 'robo advisors,' to pick your investments.

According to the Wealth Simple website, an automated advisor will often pick low-cost index Exchange Transfer Funds (ETFs) that mirror the ups and downs of the market and will charge a fraction of what traditional advisors charge clients.

Once you’ve invested in a robo advisor, Wealth Simple’s technology will take care of the rest.

    2. We Work

Although We Work has been viewed as a sinking ship in recent years after a failed business strategy and Initial Public Offering (IPO), the concept still had its potential. We Work offers coworking spaces where startups, freelancers and young professionals can come together and work in any of their over 800 locations worldwide.

Instead of investing in an office space, a monthly or long-term plan with the company can give you an affordable space to work on projects when you need it.

Calgary has two We Work office spaces located in downtown. The Edison building has 1,300 desks across five floors while the Stephen Avenue Space has 1,260 desks available.

    3. Fiverr

Back in the day, you would need an expansive and established network to be a successful freelancer. Although that would still be true today, apps like Fiverr have gained popularity for making this process much easier for anyone who needs a side hustle or yearns to be a full-time freelancer.

Some services you can find or provide on the app include content writing, graphic design, video editing, photography, photo editing, programming and more. If you can do it remotely, you can set it up!

All you have to do is set up your virtual store by preparing your profile and defining the services you provide, otherwise known as “gigs.” When clients start shopping for services, they can choose to hire you based on your qualifications and how you present yourself on the platform.

    4. The Fork

For all the foodies out there, this one may be for you! The Fork is an app that allows you to browse different restaurants by category and make reservations. One of the benefits of using the app is that you can avail discounts as high as 50 per cent by reserving a table through The Fork.

One big con, however, is the app is mainly available in Europe, Brazil and Australia. But if you’re not from these places, don’t lose hope as the company looks to be expanding fast

    5. Meetup

If you’re new to town, traveling to a different city, or would just like to meet different people, Meetup is the app you need to meet locals or people whom you share similar interests with. Meetup shows you groups formed around similar interests like yoga, cooking, hiking, cinema, photography and more. You can join groups and be notified of events you can attend or network to expand your professional and social circles.
