Well, it’s Groundhog Day… Again… I’m sure you’re wondering what 2024 has in store for us. You came to the right place. Traditionally we rely on our furry forecasters to tell us what to expect shortly, but this year we’re doing things a little differently.

Technology has evolved significantly over the past decade. There is no question that it has insinuated itself into almost every aspect of our lives. While the benefits have been plentiful, many worry about darker potential impacts in the years to come, particularly when it comes to artificial intelligence. AI Anxiety is a growing phenomenon with over 82,000 Google results. According to Scientific American, some of the biggest fears include the loss of online data privacy, potential job loss or obsolescence, the opportunity for students to cheat their way through school, and much more.

In a dark dystopian future will AI eventually replace us all? Maybe. What we really want to know though is will it replace Groundhogs as mankind’s most trusted prognosticators? I sat down with everyone’s favourite AI tool, ChatGPT, to find out more.

    Groundhog Day According to ChatGPT

Hello ChatGPT, thanks for meeting with me today. As I'm sure you're aware, on February 2nd we celebrate Groundhog Day. It is an important occasion when a meteorological marmot emerges from his cozy burrow and predicts the coming of spring. Some argue that such predictions would be far more accurate if handled by computers. What do you think?

Groundhog Day is indeed a fun and traditional event, but when it comes to meteorological predictions, relying on advanced computer models and data analysis tends to be more accurate than the predictions of our furry friends. Groundhogs, while cute, aren't exactly renowned meteorologists. The field of meteorology has significantly advanced with the help of computers, satellites, and other technologies, leading to more accurate weather predictions.

Those are some bold claims, but I admire your confidence. Tell me Chat, what do you foresee for Canada in 2024? Will we have an early spring or will we need to bundle up until late March?

I can't make specific weather predictions for specific dates or locations, including Canada in 2024. Weather forecasting requires real-time data and sophisticated models that I don't have access to.

You're not scared of being proven wrong by a groundhog, are you? I checked in with Bing Copilot for a second opinion, and this is what it told me...

“I can understand why ChatGPT would refuse to make predictions. However, it’s worth noting that the Weather Network has predicted that the winter of 2023-2024 will be influenced by a strong El Niño event, which could bring mild temperatures to much of Canada. Based on the information available to me, it’s possible that the mild temperatures brought on by the El Niño event could lead to an early spring in Canada.”

It's great that you sought additional information from Bing Copilot! Indeed, weather predictions involve a lot of variables, and while certain patterns like El Niño can influence overall trends, the specific local conditions can still be challenging to predict accurately. It's always wise to rely on up-to-date information from reputable weather sources for the most accurate forecasts.

That is calculatingly non-committal. I think Groundhogs can rest easy in terms of job security. Politicians on the other hand should probably be concerned…
